Why in News? The 20th Asian Games will be held in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, from September 19 to October 4, 2026. It will bring athletes from across Asia together in Japan, marking the country's third time hosting the Asian Games.
What are the Asian Games?
•    The Asian Games are the largest multi-sport competition in Asia. 
•    They are held once every four years.
•    They are organised under the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) and bring together 45 participating countries or regions.
•    Beyond sporting competition, the Games aim to promote friendship, mutual understanding and peace in Asia by bringing diverse Asian countries and regions together through sport.
Origin and History of the Asian Games
•    The Asian Games were first held in 1951 in New Delhi, soon after the end of the Second World War.
•    Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first Prime Minister, advocated the idea of using sport to rebuild bonds among Asian countries that had been weakened by the war and to contribute to lasting peace in Asia.
•    The inaugural Games had 11 participating countries, including Japan.
•    Since the first Games in New Delhi, the event has developed into a major continental sporting competition that promotes friendship through sport and recognition of Asia's diversity.
Asian Games and Japan
•    Japan has previously hosted the Asian Games on two occasions.
•    The 3rd Asian Games were held in Tokyo in 1958.
•    The 12th Asian Games were held in Hiroshima in 1994.
•    The 20th Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya in 2026 will therefore mark the third time Japan hosts the Asian Games.
What is Special About the Asian Games?
•    The Asian Games combine major Olympic sports with sports that have particular cultural and sporting significance in Asia.
•    The OCA Constitution allows the programme to include Olympic sports, with athletics and swimming as mandatory sports, along with five regional sports and two sports proposed by the Asian Games Organizing Committee and approved by the OCA Executive Board.
•    This structure gives the Asian Games a distinctive character by allowing sports associated strongly with Asia to appear alongside globally recognised Olympic disciplines.
•    Other examples of sports that have been included in past editions are cricket, squash and bowling.

•    The 20th Asian Games will be held in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, in 2026.
•    Aichi-Nagoya 2026 also places significant emphasis on sustainability and resource efficiency in the organisation of the Games.
Mascot: HONOHON
•    HONOHON is the official mascot of the 20th Asian Games.
•    The mascot was inspired by the fiery passion of athletes and incorporates the image of the Shachihoko, a guardian figure associated with Aichi-Nagoya.
•    The name HONOHON is derived from “Honoho,” associated with the origin of the Japanese word for flame.
•    The name reflects the image of fire rising and burning brightly, while the form is also associated with the shape of a rice ear.
Unique Features of Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games 2026
•    Recycled Medals: The Games will use metals recovered from urban mines for a portion of the medals, linking the event with the SDGs and the circular economy.
•    Sustainable Procurement: AINAGOC has introduced a Code of Sustainable Procurement covering goods, services and construction, requiring contractors to follow sustainability standards in their operations.
•    Post-Games Reuse: The organisers are promoting movable accommodations and leased materials and equipment so that resources can continue to be used after the Games instead of becoming single-use infrastructure.
•    Use of Existing Facilities: The Games will make extensive use of existing facilities, along with a cruise ship for competition venues and accommodation, helping reduce the environmental impact of new construction.
•    Overall Approach: Aichi-Nagoya 2026 seeks to make a major multi-sport event more resource-efficient, sustainable and aligned with the principles of a circular society.
