Why in News?
India and the United States have commenced the 22nd edition of their bilateral military exercise, Yudh Abhyas 2026, focusing on high-altitude warfare, long-range precision fires, counter-drone capabilities and operational interoperability.
What is Yudh Abhyas?
•    Yudh Abhyas is an annual bilateral Army-to-Army military exercise between India and the United States.
•    The exercise began in 2002 as a platoon-level exercise and has gradually evolved into a high-complexity, large-scale military exercise.
•    It has become one of the important pillars of India–US defence cooperation, with both countries using such exercises to develop mutual trust and operational coordination.
What is Being Practised in Yudh Abhyas 2026?
•    The 2026 edition is being held from September 9 to 28, with greater emphasis on capabilities relevant to modern battlefields.
•    High-altitude warfare: Arctic-trained soldiers from the US Army's 11th Airborne Division, based at Fort Wainwright, Alaska, are participating in high-altitude training in India.
•    Long-range precision fires: The US Army's 3rd Multi-Domain Task Force (3MDTF) is bringing long-range precision-fire and integrated command-and-control capabilities to the exercise.
•    Counter-drone warfare: For the first time under the exercise framework, advanced US counter-drone capabilities are being deployed in India.
•    The Mobile Low, Slow, Small Unmanned Aircraft Integrated Defeat System (MLIDS) will be integrated into the drills to train both forces in countering emerging unmanned aerial threats.
How Will the Exercise be Conducted?
•    The exercise combines a Command Post Exercise with a Field Training Exercise, allowing the two armies to practise both planning and battlefield operations.
•    The exercise will culminate in a combined live-fire demonstration involving Indian and US long-range precision-fire and rocket systems.
•    The drills are intended to improve information sharing, command-and-control coordination and operational interoperability between the two forces.
Operation Pathways and Strategic Significance
•    Yudh Abhyas 2026 is being conducted under the broader strategic framework of Operation Pathways.
•    The exercise reflects the changing nature of India–US military cooperation, which increasingly focuses on multi-domain operations, unmanned systems, precision fires and high-altitude combat readiness.
•    It also demonstrates how military exercises are being used not merely for training individual forces but for developing the ability of two militaries to operate together effectively.
Evolution of the Exercise
•    Over the years, Yudh Abhyas has covered different operational environments, including high-altitude warfare in Auli and Chaubattia, desert manoeuvres in Rajasthan, and urban and cold-environment training in the United States and Alaska.
•    Its expansion from a small platoon-level exercise in 2002 to a complex Army-to-Army exercise reflects the deepening of India–US defence cooperation.
•    India conducts more military exercises with the United States than with any other country, including Yudh Abhyas, Malabar, COPE India, Vajra Prahar and Tiger Triumph.
