Mekedatu Project
The Mekedatu Project is a proposed multi-purpose reservoir and hydropower project by the Government of Karnataka on the Cauvery River near Kanakapura in Ramanagara district. It aims to provide drinking water to Bengaluru and generate hydroelectric power.
Key Points
The project is planned at the confluence of the Cauvery River and its tributary Arkavathi River, close to the Karnataka–Tamil Nadu border.
It proposes a 99-metre-high concrete gravity dam with a storage capacity of 67 tmcft and power generation capacity of 400 MW.
The project is controversial because it may submerge over 5,000 hectares of the Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary and has faced opposition from Tamil Nadu over water-sharing concerns.
