Why in news? Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s May 2026 visit to Italy elevated India–Italy ties to a “Special Strategic Partnership” with a strong focus on innovation, technology, AI, and scientific cooperation.
· India and Italy have increasingly expanded cooperation in strategic sectors such as technology, innovation, maritime security, clean energy, and higher education.
· The recent summit highlighted innovation, scientific collaboration, and emerging technologies as core pillars of the upgraded bilateral partnership.
· India’s partnerships with technologically advanced European countries are becoming increasingly important for diversification of technology supply chains, research collaboration, and strategic autonomy.
· Creation of INNOVIT India
· India and Italy announced the establishment of INNOVIT India, an innovation hub to be located in India.
· The hub aims to strengthen cooperation between Indian and Italian innovation ecosystems.
· INNOVIT India aims to strengthen cooperation between Indian and Italian innovation ecosystems through startup acceleration, market access, business matching, joint research, university collaboration, and talent mobility in sectors such as fintech, healthcare, semiconductors, logistics, agritech, energy, quantum computing, and Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Science and Innovation Dialogue
· Both countries welcomed the first Science and Innovation Dialogue held in New Delhi in April 2025 between Indian and Italian universities and research centres.
· The next edition of the dialogue is expected to be held in Italy later in 2026.
· Institutional academic dialogue strengthens long-term innovation ecosystems and research partnerships.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) Cooperation
· India and Italy reaffirmed their commitment to a human-centric, secure, trustworthy, and robust Artificial Intelligence framework.
· Both countries agreed to cooperate in AI development and governance, including collaboration in third countries.
· During the meeting, Prime Minister Modi appreciated Italy’s participation in the AI Impact Summit held in New Delhi in February 2026.
· India’s AI diplomacy increasingly focuses on ethical AI governance, digital trust, and global technology partnerships.
