Punjab's AI Education Initiative: Artificial Intelligence as a School Subject
Why in News?
Punjab has become the first state in India to introduce Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a mainstream subject from Classes I to XII in government and affiliated schools. The initiative will be implemented by the Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) under the Sarbat.AI Project, making it one of India's largest statewide AI education programmes.
Punjab's AI Education Initiative
Punjab has become the first Indian state to integrate Artificial Intelligence as a mainstream school subject from the foundational to the senior secondary level. The initiative seeks to equip students with future-ready digital skills, promote innovation and entrepreneurship, and prepare them for a technology-driven economy.
The curriculum has been developed after studying international best practices from Singapore, Finland, the United Arab Emirates and the United States, and is aligned with UNESCO's Ethical AI Framework to promote the responsible, safe and ethical use of Artificial Intelligence.
Implementation Strategy
The programme will be implemented in a phased manner under the Sarbat.AI Project.
•    Phase I will integrate AI into the Computer Science curriculum for Classes VIII to XII through live online classes, recorded lectures, project-based learning, continuous assessment and a dedicated Learning Management System (LMS).
•    Phase II will extend age-appropriate AI education to Classes I to VII, ensuring AI learning begins from the foundational stage.
Learning outcomes in Artificial Intelligence will form part of the compulsory Computer Science curriculum and will be reflected in students' board certificates.
Scale and Institutional Support
•    The initiative is expected to benefit approximately 25,172 schools and nearly 31.5 lakh students across Punjab.
•    During the first phase, around 12,424 Computer Science teachers will implement the programme, while over two lakh teachers across different disciplines will gradually receive training to integrate AI into teaching, learning and assessment.
•    The programme builds upon PSEB's earlier AI Pilot Programme, which included a statewide AI Hackathon showcasing student innovations.
•    Its implementation is being supported by Neeev AI, with strategic collaborations involving Google, Intel, Canva and FA-AI to strengthen AI literacy, teacher capacity building, innovation and workforce readiness.
Significance
Punjab's initiative represents a major step towards integrating Artificial Intelligence into mainstream school education and positions the state as a national leader in future-ready learning. By combining global best practices with UNESCO's Ethical AI Framework, the programme seeks to ensure that students not only learn to use AI but also understand its ethical, responsible and socially beneficial applications. The initiative also reflects India's broader efforts to prepare its workforce for an increasingly AI-driven economy and digital future.
