Why in News?
Unjha Jeera (Cumin) and Unjha Fennel (Saunf) have recently been granted the Geographical Indication (GI) tag by the Geographical Indications Registry. While the recognition is expected to boost exports and strengthen the products' market identity, it has also sparked objections from farmers in Rajasthan, who argue that Unjha is primarily a trading centre rather than a major production region.
What is a Geographical Indication (GI) Tag?
•    A Geographical Indication (GI) is granted to products whose quality, reputation or characteristics are linked to a specific geographical region. 
•      In India, GI protection is provided under the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999. 
•    GI tag: 
•    Protects the product's identity and certifies its geographical origin. 
•    Helps prevent counterfeit products. 
•    Enhances brand value, export potential and market credibility.
Unjha Jeera and Unjha Fennel GI Tags
•    The Geographical Indications Registry granted GI status to Unjha Jeera and Unjha Fennel in March 2026.
•    The applications were submitted by the Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC), Unjha, with support from:
o    Government of Gujarat
o    Department of Horticulture and Farmers' Welfare
o    Sardarkrushinagar Dantiwada Agricultural University (SDAU)
o    Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India (EDII)
Why is Unjha Important?
•    Unjha, located in Mehsana district of Gujarat, is one of India's largest trading and export hubs for seed spices.
•    It serves as a major centre for:
o    Aggregation
o    Grading
o    Auctioning
o    Export of cumin and fennel.
Although it is internationally known as a spice market, its status as a major production centre has become the subject of debate.

Why are Rajasthan Farmers Opposing the GI Tag?
Farmers from Rajasthan have questioned the grant of the GI tag on several grounds:
•    They argue that Unjha is primarily a marketing centre rather than a major cultivation region.
•    Government data indicate that Mehsana contributes only a very small share of Gujarat's cumin production.
•    A substantial quantity of cumin and fennel traded in Unjha is produced in Rajasthan.
•    Farmers fear that traders may market "Unjha Jeera" as a premium product, reducing prices offered for spices produced outside the notified GI region.
Arguments Supporting the GI Tag
Supporters of the GI registration argue that:
•    Unjha has historically been the pioneering region for cumin cultivation.
•    The products possess distinctive qualities associated with the notified geographical region.
•    The GI application was supported by extensive scientific documentation and institutional evidence.
•    The recognition is expected to:
o    Improve global branding.
o    Increase exports.
o    Provide legal protection against imitation.
o    Generate better returns for farmers.
Why is the Issue Significant?
The controversy highlights an important principle of the GI system:
A Geographical Indication should protect products whose unique characteristics arise from the place of production, not merely the place where they are marketed or traded.
