Vikramshila Setu
Why in News?
• Concerns were raised regarding the structural safety of Vikramshila Setu in Bhagalpur, Bihar, after a portion beneath the bridge collapsed.
Key Facts
• Vikramshila Setu is a crucial bridge over the Ganga river, connecting North and South Bihar.
• The bridge is approximately 25 years old and is an important infrastructure link in eastern India.
Recent Development
• Experts clarified that the collapsed portion was a temporary “false wall”, constructed during the building phase to reduce water pressure.
• The damaged section was not part of the load-bearing structure, and hence does not affect the bridge’s structural integrity.
• Engineers highlighted that the visible damage relates to outer protective “jacketing”, which naturally deteriorates over time.
• Authorities have confirmed that the main structure remains safe, and removal of remaining temporary components is underway.
• The bridge is named after the ancient Vikramshila University, a prominent centre of learning in early medieval India.
